Use-after-free vulnerability in the TableBackgroundPainter::TableBackgroundData::Destroy function in Mozilla Firefox before 18.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.12 and 17.x before 17.0.2, Thunderbird before 17.0.2, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.12 and 17.x before 17.0.2, and SeaMonkey before 2.15 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) via an HTML document with a table containing many columns and column groups.
The weakness was presented 01/08/2013 by Atte Kettunen (regenrecht) with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as MFSA 2013-05 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-0744 since 01/02/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68707 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : firefox (ELSA-2013-0144)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120795 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:0144)).
Upgrading to version 18.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
