A vulnerability was found in XFree86 and X11 (Windowing System Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function SProcXCMiscGetXIDList. The SProcXCMiscGetXIDList function in the XC-MISC extension in X.Org X Window System (aka X11 or X) X11R6.0 and X.Org Server (aka xserver and xorg-server) before 1.16.3 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read or write) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted length or index value.

The weakness was disclosed 12/10/2014 by Ilja van Sprundel (Website). The advisory is shared at x.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-8096 since 10/10/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80557 (Amazon Linux AMI : xorg-x11-server (ALAS-2015-470)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350232 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for xorg-x11-server: ALAS-2015-470).

Upgrading to version 1.16.2.99.901 eliminates this vulnerability.
