LibVNCServer up to 0.9.9 HandleRFBServerMessage input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in LibVNCServer up to 0.9.9. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function HandleRFBServerMessage. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The HandleRFBServerMessage function in libvncclient/rfbproto.c in LibVNCServer 0.9.9 and earlier does not check certain malloc return values, which allows remote VNC servers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code by specifying a large screen size in a (1) FramebufferUpdate, (2) ResizeFrameBuffer, or (3) PalmVNCReSizeFrameBuffer message.

The weakness was published 12/15/2014 by Nicolas Ruff as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at ocert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-6052. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79188 (CentOS 6 / 7 : libvncserver (CESA-2014:1826)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168339 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for LibVNCServer (SUSE-SU-2015:2088-2)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
