Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.18.1 (Operating System). Affected is the function parse_rock_ridge_inode_internal of the component ISO 9660 Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The parse_rock_ridge_inode_internal function in fs/isofs/rock.c in the Linux kernel before 3.18.2 does not validate a length value in the Extensions Reference (ER) System Use Field, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory via a crafted iso9660 image.
The weakness was presented 01/09/2015 by Prasad J Pandit with Red Hat Product Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-9584 since 01/09/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80558 (Debian DSA-3128-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167678 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2015:0652-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.0.10 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (80558), SecurityFocus (BID 71883†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-47982†). See VDB-10840, VDB-12213, VDB-13142 and VDB-67533 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
