Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 37.0 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors.

The weakness was shared 03/31/2015 by Christian Holler, Andrew McCreight, Gary Kwong, Karl Tomlinson, Randell Jesup, Shu-yu Guo, Steve Fink and Tooru Fujisawa with Dell as MFSA 2015-30 as confirmed security advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-0814 since 01/07/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:

Mozilla developers and community identified and fixed several memory safety bugs in the browser engine used in Firefox and other Mozilla-based products. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances, and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82482 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (d0c97697-df2c-4b8b-bff2-cec24dc35af8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196051 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Firefox Vulnerabilities (USN-2550-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (102002), Tenable (82482), SecurityFocus (BID 73464†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031996†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-49295†). Further details are available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The entries VDB-7070, VDB-74500, VDB-74501 and VDB-74502 are related to this item.
