The weakness was published 03/31/2015 by Christian Holler, Byron Campen and Steve Fink as MFSA 2015-30 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-0815 since 01/07/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:
Mozilla developers and community identified and fixed several memory safety bugs in the browser engine used in Firefox and other Mozilla-based products. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances, and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82477 (CentOS 5 / 6 / 7 : firefox / xulrunner (CESA-2015:0766)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196052 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Thunderbird Vulnerabilities (USN-2552-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
