Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2 Apache race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component Apache. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was released 04/08/2015 by Marek Kroemeke as HT204659 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0226 since 12/02/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

Multiple vulnerabilities existed in Apache versions prior to 2.4.10 and 2.2.29, including one that may allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code. These issues were addressed by updating Apache to versions 2.4.10 and 2.2.29

A public exploit has been developed by Marek Kroemeke in Python and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78331 (Amazon Linux AMI : httpd (ALAS-2014-388)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185106 (HP-UX Apache Web Server Suite Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX03337)).

Upgrading to version 10.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16631.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (34133), Tenable (78331), SecurityFocus (BID 68678†), OSVDB (109216†) and Secunia (SA60536†).
