A vulnerability was found in Lenovo System Update up to 5.6.0.27 and classified as problematic. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-2219 since 03/05/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Lenovo System Update uses a service called SUService.exe to run system updates. As part of the authentication and validation process the service only accepts commands if a valid security token is passed along with the command. Vulnerabilities were discovered on how the security tokens were generated allowing an attacker to run commands.
The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83736 (Lenovo System Update < 5.06.0034 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124280 (Lenovo System Update Service Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 5.06.0034 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at support.lenovo.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
