Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Module::Signature up to 0.73. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component SIGNATURE File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Module::Signature before 0.74 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary shell commands via a crafted SIGNATURE file which is not properly handled when generating checksums from a signed manifest.
The weakness was presented 05/19/2015 by John Lightsey (Website). The advisory is shared for download at metacpan.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-3408 since 04/23/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83501 (Debian DSA-3261-1 : libmodule-signature-perl - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168410 (OpenSuSE Security Update for perl-Module-Signature (openSUSE-SU-2016:0163-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.74 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (83501), SecurityFocus (BID 73935†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-49901†).
