CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8o/1.0.1k/1.0.2a. This affects the function ssl3_get_new_session_ticket. Performing a manipulation results in race condition. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-1791. There is no available exploit. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8o/1.0.1k/1.0.2a (Network Encryption Software). This affects the function ssl3_get_new_session_ticket. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The issue has been introduced in 06/01/2010. The weakness was presented 06/02/2015 as Fix race condition in NewSessionTicket as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.openssl.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-1791 since 02/17/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:

If a NewSessionTicket is received by a multi-threaded client when attempting to reuse a previous ticket then a race condition can occur potentially leading to a double free of the ticket data.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1827 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84251 (Amazon Linux AMI : openssl (ALAS-2015-550) (Logjam)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 316103 (Cisco ASA OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (cisco-sa-20150612-openssl)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.openssl.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The git commit contains the following remark:

This also fixes RT#3808 where a session ID is changed for a session already in the client session cache. Since the session ID is the key to the cache this breaks the cache access.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (84251), SecurityFocus (BID 75161†), SecurityTracker (ID 1032479†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52140†). Further details are available at security-tracker.debian.org. See VDB-75854, VDB-75855, VDB-75856 and VDB-75857 for similar entries.
