Details
A vulnerability has been found in OpenSSL 0.9.8/1.0.0/1.0.1/1.0.2 (Network Encryption Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function X509_cmp_time of the component Certificate Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was released 06/11/2015 by Robert Swiecki with Google Security Team as secadv_20150611.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openssl.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-1789 since 02/17/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3628 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84301 (Fedora 22 : openssl-1.0.1k-10.fc22 (2015-10047)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 316103 (Cisco ASA OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (cisco-sa-20150612-openssl)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8zg, 1.0.0s, 1.0.1n or 1.0.2b eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20620.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (103779), Tenable (84301), SecurityFocus (BID 75156†), SecurityTracker (ID 1032564†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-54678†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-75693, VDB-75854, VDB-75855 and VDB-75857. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
