Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL 0.9.8/1.0.0/1.0.1/1.0.2 (Network Encryption Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component PKCS#7 Handler. The manipulation of the argument EnvelopedContent with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability.
The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was disclosed 06/11/2015 by Michal Zalewski with Google Security Team as secadv_20150611.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-1790 since 02/17/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3628 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84251 (Amazon Linux AMI : openssl (ALAS-2015-550) (Logjam)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 316103 (Cisco ASA OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (cisco-sa-20150612-openssl)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8zg, 1.0.0s, 1.0.1n or 1.0.2b eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (103780), Tenable (84251), SecurityFocus (BID 75157†), SecurityTracker (ID 1032564†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56934†). The entries VDB-75693, VDB-75854, VDB-75855 and VDB-75856 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
