A vulnerability has been found in VMware Workstation, Player and Fusion on Windows (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. Stack-based buffer overflow in the JPEG2000 plugin in IrfanView PlugIns before 4.33 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a JPEG2000 (JP2) file with a crafted Quantization Default (QCD) marker segment.
The weakness was published 06/09/2015 by Kostya Kortchinsky with Google Security Team as VMSA-2015-0004 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vmware.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0897. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84220 (VMware Player 7.x < 7.1.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2015-0004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115234 (VMware Workstation,Player,Horizon Client and Fusion Security Update (VMSA-2015-0004)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
