A vulnerability was found in Google Chrome up to 43.0.2357.134 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function V8ContextNativeHandler::GetModuleSystem of the file extensions/renderer/v8_context_native_handler.cc of the component Blink. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the V8ContextNativeHandler::GetModuleSystem function in extensions/renderer/v8_context_native_handler.cc in Google Chrome before 44.0.2403.89 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML by leveraging the lack of a certain V8 context restriction, aka a Blink "Universal XSS (UXSS)."
The weakness was disclosed 07/23/2015 by Chamal De Silva (Cloudfuzzer) with Baidu X-Team as Stable Channel Update, July 2015 as confirmed release notes (Blog). It is possible to read the advisory at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-1286 since 01/21/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84992 (Debian DSA-3315-1 : chromium-browser - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167983 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Chromium (openSUSE-SU-2015:1287-1)).
Upgrading to version 44.0.2403.89 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
