A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 18.0.2 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown function of the component GIF Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The RasterImage::DrawFrameTo function in Mozilla Firefox before 19.0, Thunderbird before 17.0.3, and SeaMonkey before 2.16 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information from process memory or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted GIF image.
The weakness was published 02/19/2013 by Atte Kettunen (Inferno) with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as MFSA 2013-22 as confirmed advisory (Mozilla Blog). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-0772 since 01/02/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71368 (Oracle Linux 6 : thunderbird (ELSA-2013-1823)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156749 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Thunderbird (ELSA-2013-1823)).
Upgrading to version 19.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
