A vulnerability has been found in Apple iOS up to 8.4.1 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component dyld. The weakness was disclosed 09/16/2015 by Filippo Bigarella (beist) with @PanguTeam/TaiG Jailbreak Team as HT205212 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-5839 since 08/06/2015. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/21/2024). The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86270 (Mac OS X < 10.11 Multiple Vulnerabilities (GHOST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).
Upgrading to version 9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
