Apple iOS up to 8.4.1 Kernel TCP Sequence input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Apple iOS up to 8.4.1. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Kernel. The manipulation results in input validation (TCP Sequence). This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2015-5879. There is not any exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Apple iOS up to 8.4.1 (Smartphone Operating System). Affected is an unknown code block of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability (TCP Sequence). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

XNU in the kernel in Apple iOS before 9 does not properly validate the headers of TCP packets, which allows remote attackers to bypass the sequence-number protection mechanism and cause a denial of service (TCP connection disruption) via a crafted header.

The weakness was released 09/16/2015 by Jonathan Looney (beist) as HT205212 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-5879 since 08/06/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).

Upgrading to version 9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 76764†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-53154†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-9015, VDB-68413, VDB-77828 and VDB-77762. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
