Apple iOS up to 8.4.1 NetworkExtension Kernel Memory information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 8.4.1 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component NetworkExtension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Kernel Memory). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

NetworkExtension in the kernel in Apple iOS before 9 does not properly initialize an unspecified data structure, which allows attackers to obtain sensitive memory-layout information via a crafted app.

The weakness was shared 09/16/2015 by Maxime Villard (beist) with m00nbsd as HT205212 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-5831 since 08/06/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86270 (Mac OS X < 10.11 Multiple Vulnerabilities (GHOST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).

Upgrading to version 9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86270), SecurityFocus (BID 76764†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-53107†). The entries VDB-9015, VDB-68413, VDB-74127 and VDB-77828 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
