Google Chrome before 25.0.1364.97 on Windows and Linux, and before 25.0.1364.99 on Mac OS X, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (incorrect read operation) via crafted data in the Matroska container format.
The weakness was disclosed 02/21/2013 by Atte Kettunen (Inferno) with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as 167069 as confirmed posting (Website). The advisory is shared for download at code.google.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0881 since 01/07/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 05/05/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64859 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (dfd92cb2-7d48-11e2-ad48-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165877 (SUSE Security Update for Chromium: Updated to 27.0.1425 (openSUSE-SU-2013:0454-1)).
Upgrading to version 25.0.1364.97 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.chromium.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
