Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 40 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function vp9_init_context_buffers of the component Libvpx. The manipulation as part of a VP9 File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the vp9_init_context_buffers function in libvpx, as used in Mozilla Firefox before 41.0 and Firefox ESR 38.x before 38.3, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted VP9 file.
The weakness was disclosed 09/24/2015 by Christian Holler (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-4506 since 06/10/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86514 (CentOS 5 / 6 / 7 : firefox (CESA-2015:1834)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168202 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SU-2015:2081-1)).
Upgrading to version 41.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20821.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (106632), Tenable (86514), SecurityFocus (BID 76816†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52947†). The entries VDB-78021, VDB-78022, VDB-78030 and VDB-78032 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
