Use-after-free vulnerability in the HTMLVideoElement interface in Mozilla Firefox before 41.0 and Firefox ESR 38.x before 38.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted JavaScript code that modifies the URI table of a media element, aka ZDI-CAN-3176.
The weakness was published 09/24/2015 by Christian Holler as ZDI-CAN-3176 as confirmed advisory (ZDI). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-4509 since 06/10/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86514 (CentOS 5 / 6 / 7 : firefox (CESA-2015:1834)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168202 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SU-2015:2081-1)).
Upgrading to version 41.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20821.
