A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 40 (Web Browser). Affected by this vulnerability is the function WorkerPrivate::NotifyFeatures of the component IndexedDB Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Race condition in the WorkerPrivate::NotifyFeatures function in Mozilla Firefox before 41.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (use-after-free and application crash) by leveraging improper interaction between shared workers and the IndexedDB implementation.
The weakness was released 09/24/2015 by Francisco Alonso (Felix) with NowSecure (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-4510 since 06/10/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86079 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (2d56c7f4-b354-428f-8f48-38150c607a05)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168108 (OpenSuSE Security Update for MozillaFirefox (openSUSE-SU-2015:1658-1)).
Upgrading to version 41.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
