A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 40 on Windows (Web Browser) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file updater.exe of the component Maintenance Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability (File). updater.exe in Mozilla Firefox before 41.0 and Firefox ESR 38.x before 38.3 on Windows allows local users to write to arbitrary files by conducting a junction attack and waiting for an update operation by the Mozilla Maintenance Service.
The weakness was released 09/24/2015 by Holger Fuhrmannek (Website). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-4505 since 06/10/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
