A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 40 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function AnimationThread. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The AnimationThread function in Mozilla Firefox before 41.0 and Firefox ESR 38.x before 38.3 uses an incorrect argument to the sscanf function, which might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack-based buffer overflow and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via unknown vectors.
The weakness was shared 09/24/2015 by Christian Holler (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-7176 since 09/16/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
