CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.10/5-1.10.1/5-1.10.2/5-1.10.3/5-1.11. The impacted element is the function pkinit_check_kdc_pkid of the file src/plugins/preauth/pkinit/pkinit_crypto_openssl.c. Executing a manipulation can lead to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2013-1415. In addition, an exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.10/5-1.10.1/5-1.10.2/5-1.10.3/5-1.11 (Network Authentication Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function pkinit_check_kdc_pkid of the file src/plugins/preauth/pkinit/pkinit_crypto_openssl.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The pkinit_check_kdc_pkid function in plugins/preauth/pkinit/pkinit_crypto_openssl.c in the PKINIT implementation in the Key Distribution Center (KDC) in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) before 1.10.4 and 1.11.x before 1.11.1 does not properly handle errors during extraction of fields from an X.509 certificate, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via a malformed KRB5_PADATA_PK_AS_REQ AS-REQ request.

The weakness was presented 02/15/2013 as 7570 as confirmed bug report (Website). The advisory is shared for download at krbdev.mit.edu. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1415 since 01/24/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64860 (FreeBSD : krb5 -- NULL pointer dereference in the KDC PKINIT code [CVE-2013-1415] (f54584bc-7d2b-11e2-9bd1-206a8a720317)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195579 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Krb5 Vulnerabilities (USN-2310-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.10.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 25998.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82331), Tenable (64860), SecurityFocus (BID 58144†), OSVDB (90609†) and Secunia (SA52390†). See VDB-7884, VDB-8455, VDB-67256 and VDB-64211 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
