A vulnerability has been found in MIT Kerberos 1.10.4 (Network Authentication Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function prep_reprocess_req of the file do_tgs_req.c of the component Key Distribution Center. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The prep_reprocess_req function in do_tgs_req.c in the Key Distribution Center (KDC) in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) before 1.10.5 does not properly perform service-principal realm referral, which allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via a crafted TGS-REQ request.
The weakness was published 04/05/2013 as krb5-1.10 as not defined changelog entry (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at web.mit.edu. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1416 since 01/24/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74989 (openSUSE Security Update : krb5 (openSUSE-SU-2013:0904-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195579 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Krb5 Vulnerabilities (USN-2310-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.10.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13263.
