Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in MIT Kerberos up to 1.10.3 (Network Authentication Software). Affected is the function pkinit_server_return_padata of the file plugins/preauth/pkinit/pkinit_srv.c of the component Key Distribution Center. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The pkinit_server_return_padata function in plugins/preauth/pkinit/pkinit_srv.c in the PKINIT implementation in the Key Distribution Center (KDC) in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) before 1.10.4 attempts to find an agility KDF identifier in inappropriate circumstances, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via a crafted Draft 9 request.
The weakness was shared 01/02/2013 as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared for download at web.mit.edu. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1016 since 02/07/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68792 (Oracle Linux 6 : krb5 (ELSA-2013-0656)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195579 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Krb5 Vulnerabilities (USN-2310-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.10.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82536), Tenable (68792), SecurityFocus (BID 58144†), OSVDB (90895†) and Secunia (SA52680†).
