The Mail Drop feature in Mail in Apple OS X before 10.11 mishandles encryption parameters for attachments, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain sensitive information by sniffing the network during transmission of an S/MIME e-mail message with a large attachment.

The weakness was disclosed 10/09/2015 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz with CXsecurity (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-5884 since 08/06/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).

Upgrading to version 10.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
