The Secure Empty Trash feature in Finder in Apple OS X before 10.11 improperly deletes Trash files, which might allow local users to obtain sensitive information by reading storage media, as demonstrated by reading a flash drive.
The weakness was disclosed 10/09/2015 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-5901 since 08/06/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).
Upgrading to version 10.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
