The EFI component in Apple OS X before 10.11 allows physically proximate attackers to modify firmware during the EFI update process by inserting an Apple Ethernet Thunderbolt adapter with crafted code in an Option ROM, aka a "Thunderstrike" issue. NOTE: this issue exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2014-4498.
The weakness was published 10/09/2015 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive (Website). The advisory is shared for download at trmm.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-5914 since 08/06/2015. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).
Upgrading to version 10.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
