A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Excel and SharePoint Server (Spreadsheet Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function calculatedColumnFormula of the component Object Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Excel 2010 SP2, Excel 2013 SP1, Excel 2013 RT SP1, Excel 2016, Excel for Mac 2011, Excel 2016 for Mac, and Excel Services on SharePoint Server 2010 SP2 and 2013 SP1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted calculatedColumnFormula object in an Office document, aka "Microsoft Office Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 10/13/2015 with Zero Day Initiative as MS15-110 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-2555 since 03/19/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86382 (MS15-110: Security Updates for Microsoft Office to Address Remote Code Execution (3096440) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110260 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS15-110)).
Applying the patch MS15-110 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21289.
