A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Visio 2007 SP3/2010 SP2 (Image Processing Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component UML Data Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in Microsoft Visio 2007 SP3 and 2010 SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted UML data in an Office document, aka "Microsoft Office Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 10/13/2015 by kdot with Zero Day Initiative as MS15-110 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-2557 since 03/19/2015. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86374 (MS15-110: Security Updates for Microsoft Office to Address Remote Code Execution (3089440)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110260 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS15-110)).
Applying the patch MS15-110 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21296.
