A vulnerability was found in LibreOffice and OpenOffice (Office Suite Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown function of the component OpenDocument File. The manipulation of the argument LinkUpdateMode with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. LibreOffice before 4.4.5 and Apache OpenOffice before 4.1.2 uses the stored LinkUpdateMode configuration information in OpenDocument Format files and templates when handling links, which might allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via a crafted document, which embeds data from local files into (1) Calc or (2) Writer.
The weakness was disclosed 11/10/2015 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-4551 since 06/12/2015. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86757 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : Recommended update for LibreOffice (SUSE-SU-2015:1915-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168735 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Security LibreOffice and related (openSUSE-SU-2016:0588-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 23816.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86757), SecurityFocus (BID 77486†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-54589†). The entries VDB-68293, VDB-72850, VDB-79058 and VDB-79108 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
