Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Bluetooth. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Bluetooth HCI interface in Apple OS X before 10.11.2 allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was released 12/08/2015 by Ian Beer (beist) with Google Project Zero as HT205637 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-7108 since 09/16/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A memory corruption issue existed in the Bluetooth HCI interface. This issue was addressed through improved memory handling.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87314 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124389 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.2 and Security Update 2015-008 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-12-08-3)).
Upgrading to version 10.11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
