A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.1 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Kernel. The kernel in Apple iOS before 9.2, OS X before 10.11.2, tvOS before 9.1, and watchOS before 2.1 allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via unspecified vectors, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-7083.
The weakness was disclosed 12/08/2015 by Ian Beer with Google Project Zero as HT205637 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-7084 since 09/16/2015. Attacking locally is a requirement. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
Multiple memory corruption issues existed in the kernel. These issues were addressed through improved memory handling.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87321 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Updates 2015-005 / 2015-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124389 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.2 and Security Update 2015-008 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-12-08-3)).
Upgrading to version 10.11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
