Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.1 libc memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2015-7038. The attack can be launched remotely. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.1 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown part of the component libc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in libc in Apple iOS before 9.2, OS X before 10.11.2, tvOS before 9.1, and watchOS before 2.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted package, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-7039.

The weakness was disclosed 12/08/2015 by John Villamil (j00ru) with Yahoo Pentest Team as HT205637 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-7038 since 09/16/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 11/13/2024). The advisory points out:

Multiple buffer overflows existed in the C standard library. These issues were addressed through improved bounds checking.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87321 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Updates 2015-005 / 2015-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124389 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.2 and Security Update 2015-008 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-12-08-3)).

Upgrading to version 10.11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87321) and SecurityFocus (BID 78719†). The entries VDB-78550, VDB-78551, VDB-79541 and VDB-79545 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
