Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 9.1 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The kernel in Apple iOS before 9.2, OS X before 10.11.2, tvOS before 9.1, and watchOS before 2.1 allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via unspecified vectors, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-7084.
The weakness was disclosed 12/08/2015 by Ian Beer with Google Project Zero as HT205635 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-7083 since 09/16/2015. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The advisory points out:
Multiple memory corruption issues existed in the kernel. These issues were addressed through improved memory handling.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87314 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124389 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.2 and Security Update 2015-008 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-12-08-3)).
Upgrading to version 9.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87314), SecurityFocus (BID 78719†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-55247†). The entries VDB-79541, VDB-79545, VDB-79546 and VDB-79547 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
