A vulnerability has been found in OpenSSH up to 5.x/6.x/7.1p1 (Connectivity Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function resend_bytes of the file roaming_common.c. The resend_bytes function in roaming_common.c in the client in OpenSSH 5.x, 6.x, and 7.x before 7.1p2 allows remote servers to obtain sensitive information from process memory by requesting transmission of an entire buffer, as demonstrated by reading a private key.
The weakness was released 01/14/2016 with Qualys as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-0777 since 12/16/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87972 (Amazon Linux AMI : openssh (ALAS-2016-638)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124644 (IBM AIX OpenSSH Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 7.1p2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 22609.
