Summary
A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 4.4.1. Affected is the function tty_ioctl of the file drivers/tty/tty_io.c. Performing a manipulation results in race condition.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-0723. Attacking locally is a requirement. No exploit is available.
It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.4.1 (Operating System). This affects the function tty_ioctl of the file drivers/tty/tty_io.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in the tty_ioctl function in drivers/tty/tty_io.c in the Linux kernel through 4.4.1 allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory or cause a denial of service (use-after-free and system crash) by making a TIOCGETD ioctl call during processing of a TIOCSETD ioctl call.
The weakness was published 02/08/2016 with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared at security-tracker.debian.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-0723 since 12/15/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87995 (Debian DSA-3448-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196465 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2967-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87995), SecurityFocus (BID 82950†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56434†). Similar entries are available at VDB-78542, VDB-80792, VDB-80796 and VDB-80803. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
