Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.2.x (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file net/sctp/sm_sideeffect.c of the component Lock Socket Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
net/sctp/sm_sideeffect.c in the Linux kernel before 4.3 does not properly manage the relationship between a lock and a socket, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (deadlock) via a crafted sctp_accept call.
The weakness was presented 02/08/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-8767 since 01/11/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87995 (Debian DSA-3448-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168771 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:1203-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (110582), Tenable (87995), SecurityFocus (BID 80268†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56442†). See VDB-8569, VDB-78541, VDB-79223 and VDB-79228 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
