Summary
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.2.3. Affected by this issue is the function slhc_init of the file drivers/net/slip/slhc.c of the component Slot Number Handler. This manipulation of the argument PPPIOCSMAXCID as part of IOCTL causes null pointer dereference.
This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-7799. It is possible to launch the attack on the local host. There is not any exploit available.
It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.2.3 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function slhc_init of the file drivers/net/slip/slhc.c of the component Slot Number Handler. The manipulation of the argument PPPIOCSMAXCID as part of a IOCTL leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The slhc_init function in drivers/net/slip/slhc.c in the Linux kernel through 4.2.3 does not ensure that certain slot numbers are valid, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) via a crafted PPPIOCSMAXCID ioctl call.
The weakness was released 10/19/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared at code.google.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-7799 since 10/09/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87265 (Debian DLA-360-1 : linux-2.6 security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168771 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:1203-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
