Details
A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 2.8.5 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function bayer_to_rgb24_wrapper/bayer_to_yv12_wrapper of the file libswscale/swscale_unscaled.c of the component CINE File Handler. The manipulation of the argument Height with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
libswscale/swscale_unscaled.c in FFmpeg before 2.8.6 does not validate certain height values, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array read access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted .cine file, related to the bayer_to_rgb24_wrapper and bayer_to_yv12_wrapper functions.
The weakness was presented 02/12/2016 by Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.videolan.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-2328 since 02/11/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91703 (GLSA-201606-09 : FFmpeg: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 2.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (91703), SecurityFocus (BID 83332†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57387†). See VDB-80942 for similar entry. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
