Details
A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 2.8.5 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function tiff_decode_tag/decode_frame of the file libavcodec/tiff.c of the component TIFF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
libavcodec/tiff.c in FFmpeg before 2.8.6 does not properly validate RowsPerStrip values and YCbCr chrominance subsampling factors, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted TIFF file, related to the tiff_decode_tag and decode_frame functions.
The weakness was shared 02/12/2016 by Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.videolan.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-2329 since 02/11/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
