CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 2.8.5 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function gif_image_write_image/gif_encode_init/gif_encode_close of the file libavcodec/gif.c of the component TGA File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

libavcodec/gif.c in FFmpeg before 2.8.6 does not properly calculate a buffer size, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted .tga file, related to the gif_image_write_image, gif_encode_init, and gif_encode_close functions.

The weakness was published 02/12/2016 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.videolan.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-2330 since 02/11/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90349 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : libav vulnerabilities (USN-2944-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196441 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libav Vulnerabilities (USN-2944-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (90349), SecurityFocus (BID 84217†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57389†). Similar entries are available at VDB-68316, VDB-75955, VDB-79343 and VDB-80278. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
