Cisco IOS up to 15.2 VRF/NAT Features race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Cisco IOS up to 15.2 (Router Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component VRF/NAT Features. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Race condition in the VRF-aware NAT feature in Cisco IOS 12.2 through 12.4 and 15.0 through 15.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via IPv4 packets, aka Bug IDs CSCtg47129 and CSCtz96745.

The weakness was presented 03/27/2013 with Cisco as File 120990/Cis as confirmed advisory (Packetstorm). It is possible to read the advisory at packetstormsecurity.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Cisco. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1142 since 01/11/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65888 (Cisco IOS Software Network Address Translation Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20130327-nat)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43268 (Cisco IOS Software Network Address Translation Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20130327-nat)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (65888), SecurityFocus (BID 58745†), OSVDB (91756†), Secunia (SA52778†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1028349†).
