Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.3 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Python. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the png_combine_row function in libpng before 1.5.21 and 1.6.x before 1.6.16, when running on 64-bit systems, might allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a "very wide interlaced" PNG image.
The weakness was published 03/21/2016 by Alex as HT206167 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-9495 since 01/03/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:
Multiple vulnerabilities existed in libpng versions prior to 1.6.20. These were addressed by updating libpng to version 1.6.20.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81063 (openSUSE Security Update : libpng16 (openSUSE-SU-2015:0161-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123825 (Solaris 11.2 Support Repository Update (SRU) 13.6.0 Missing).
Upgrading to version 10.11.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
