WebKit in Apple iOS before 9.3 does not prevent hidden web views from reading orientation and motion data, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information about a device s physical environment via a crafted web site.
The weakness was published 03/21/2016 as HT206166 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-1780 since 01/13/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
A hidden web page may be able to access device-orientation and device-motion data. This issue was addressed by suspending the availability of this data when the web view is hidden.
Upgrading to version 9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
