WebKit in Apple iOS before 9.3 and Safari before 9.1 allows remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy and obtain physical-location data via a crafted geolocation request.
The weakness was released 03/21/2016 as HT206166 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-1779 since 01/13/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. An issue existed in the parsing of geolocation requests. This was addressed through improved validation of the security origin for geolocation requests.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124837 (Apple Safari 9.1 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-03-21-6)).
Upgrading to version 9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
