GNU C Library up to 2.22 __hcreate_r size memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.22. It has been declared as problematic. This impacts the function __hcreate_r. Executing a manipulation of the argument size can lead to memory corruption. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-8778. The attack may be launched remotely. There is no exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.22 (Software Library). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function __hcreate_r. The manipulation of the argument size with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer overflow in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) before 2.23 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via the size argument to the __hcreate_r function, which triggers out-of-bounds heap-memory access.

The weakness was shared 04/19/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.fedoraproject.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8778 since 01/19/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88767 (Debian DSA-3480-1 : eglibc - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196484 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Eglibc, Glibc Vulnerabilities (USN-2985-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.23 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88767), SecurityFocus (BID 83275†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-58082†). The entries VDB-10583, VDB-73929, VDB-75092 and VDB-79344 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
