A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.22 (Software Library). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function catopen. The manipulation of the argument catalog_name with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Stack-based buffer overflow in the catopen function in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) before 2.23 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long catalog name.

The weakness was published 04/19/2016 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz with CXsecurity (Website). The advisory is shared at sourceware.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-8779 since 01/18/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
